Synopsis
This global story of fame, fortune, and musicals, delves into the compromises made in pursuit of stardom. Chicago is a powerful and entertaining story conveyed through song and choreography.
The production is the second-longest running performance ever to be presented on Broadway, outranked only by "The Phantom of the Opera". Chicago portrays the story of two competing and vaudevillian performers named Velma and Roxie imprisoned in jail for murder.
While Velma is already a well-known vaudevillian performer, Roxie is a up-and-coming performer trying to build her fame. Although they were both jailed for murder they had different incentives. Velma's intent was betrayal and revenge after finding her husband and sister in a compromising position. Conversely, Roxie's motive was calculated ambition and ruthlessness. Thus, unlike Velma's action, which was driven by emotion, Roxie's strategy was calculated, and was intentionally used to draw notoriety.
In between, Chicago also reveals the hidden game played by law enforcement and civilians. Roxie's and Velma's lawyer Billy Flynn, who focuses on defending female prisoners charged of murder is seen transforming courtroom proceedings into theatrical events, by tweaking his client's case into sensational shows composed of spectacle and sympathy.
While Matron "Mama" Morton is portrayed helping the two convicts build a connection with the outside world, mainly with Billy, and exploiting the other criminals for her benefit.
