The Broadway musical, written by the lauded playwright Anthony McCarten, was directed by Robert Gaudio and the award-winning Ken Davenport. With over 6 decades of Diamond’s music, the team produced a “musical collage” with songs that take on "lives of their own”, as McCarten stated in an interview with The Boston Globe for the Neil Diamond Musical. 

This magical 2 hour 15 minute journey comprises two acts, the first ending with the beloved number Sweet Caroline, followed by a 15-minute intermission. After restocking on food and drink, rejoin the show for another hour of outstanding acting and storytelling.

The Production

Many long-time fans of Neil Diamond still remember when his 1976 album, A Beautiful Noise, first dropped. Those same fans will never forget seeing the musical of the same name LIVE as it came to Cincinnati. The exciting performance delighted audiences from the opening act with a full engaging story and uplifting songs. 

The musical soon ended up on NYC Broadway, which lastest from late 2022 into early 2024 at the Broadhurst Theatre. Talents like Will Swenson (who played the young Neil Diamond), Mark Jacoby (present-day Diamond), and Linda Powell (The Doctor) reprised their roles after the Boston production. 

The musical swiftly took to the road. With a fresh new cast, including the American Idol winner, Nick Fradiani. Fradiani announced he would play the role of the young Neil Diamond. 

The Story

The tale follows the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Famer, starting in the present dayreminiscing from a therapist’s office. As Diamond, he talks about how he can no longer perform like he used to while the doctor helps him cope with that realization throughout A Beautiful Noise. 

The story goes back to Diamond's Brooklyn childhood, discussing his introduction to music and all the good and bad times since then, including his rise to stardom and struggle with depression. But, what die-hard fans anticipate most is reliving Diamond’s catalog of hits in the Neil Diamond Musical.

Awards & Reviews

While original stage play was nominated for Outstanding Production of a Musical by the Drama League Awards and Outstanding New Broadway Musical, the cast took home the gold. Hoggett, Hurder, and LeProtto won Outstanding Ensemble in a Broadway Show for their dance routines. Other nominations include the Drama Desk Award and Drama League Awards.
