The musical

Universally recognized for its unique jazz-influenced theme, mesmerizing choreography, and minimalist staging style which reflects the essence of vaudeville, the musical firmly criticizes the obsession with celebrity culture.

The reimagined musical set in 1920, featuring music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and a book by Ebb and Bob Fosse, centers around the themes of decadence, crime, and the seduction of fame. After being unveiled on Broadway in 1975, the musical has sparked intense debate and discussion, mainly for its provocative message, and cultural impact.

The story

Similar to Michael Corleone from The Godfather who phased from an idealistic role to a ruthless and cunning leader, Chicago is a journey through the transformations one goes through to satisfy one's thirst for fame and fortune.

The show illustrates how even crime can be a way for fame, highlighting the flaw in the justice system. The depicts how individuals mold themselves, and who they are to reach their ultimate personal goal. The show became groundbreaking from the start for changing the criminal game and introducing new roles of "women" to the sector. The 1996 Broadway production kept the record as the second-longest-running American musical in Broadway history.

Chicago tries to showcase the superficiality of fame, and the contradiction between good deeds and status, that not all famous people are successful in the sense of morality. The show portrays various individuals each acting for their personal interest, and how they impact each other's lives, through different perspectives.

The awards

The musical has gained numerous awards including the Tony Awards (1997), Drama Desk Awards (1997), Grammy Awards (1998), Academy Awards (2003), Golden Globe Awards (2003), BAFTA Awards (2003), and more.
