Six the Musical is a “modern retelling” of the fate of queens who married King Henry VIII during the Renaissance in England. Although some circumstances are works of fiction, these characters were based on the real wives of the famous monarch. Six is a grim but funny take on pieces of history that have been famous in books and movies. This time, it’s a stage musical presentation that mimics a reality competition series! These queens are set to deliver outstanding music numbers written and composed by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss. Six the Musical has won numerous accolades, including two Tony Awards (Best Original Score and Best Costume Design in a Musical), four Drama Desk Awards (including Outstanding Music), and two Outer Critics Circle Awards!
Six the Musical was originally a project by former Cambridge University Students Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss for the 2017 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The concept was inspired by Antonia Fraser’s The Six Vies of Henry VII and a Beyonce concert. It sounds surreal, but this was the early stage of its development. Soon enough, the musical was born. After receiving the attention of numerous major producers, Six went on a UK tour, followed by a production in London’s West End in 2019. In the same year, the production also went on tour in North America, Australia, on the Norwegian Cruise Line, and more. In 2020, Six the Musical finally premiered on Broadway at the Lena Horne Theatre. The musical is directed by Moss and Jamie Armitage. Meanwhile, the production features outstanding scenic design by Emma Bailey and costume design by Gabriella Slade.
“Ferocious, feminist, and fun!” – Mashable
Explosive” and “joyous!” – The Guardian
Due to rave reviews and high demand, Six the Musical went on tour again in 2022. It has been an ongoing production that continuously entertained theater lovers across the U.S. and Canada. Countless publications wrote phenomenal reviews and praised the musical for its wit, outstanding score, and providing great comedy. The Variety Magazine called it a “Pop savvy historical reimagining” by Tony Marlow and Lucy Moss. “This fast-paced show — it’s just 80 minutes long — places these Old Spice Girls in a competitive pop-rock concert — think “The Six Factor” — with the wife who is judged as having suffered the most to be elevated to lead singer. It may not be much of a compensation for their pains — especially for those who have been literally on the chopping block. But for theatergoers, this show is as sharp and shiny as a sequined stiletto heel and couldn’t have come at a better time.”
Meanwhile, the New York Times’s Jesse Green praised the musical for its feminist theme and for standing up to female degradation. “The wit of the conception and the execution — the songs are a slick blend of pop grooves, tight lyrics, and old-fashioned musical theater craft — goes a long way toward keeping the show from sagging.”
Over at The Globe and Mail, critic Glenn Sumi praised the music’s ability to captivate its viewers. “And no wonder. Six’s songs are catchy, its message of female empowerment and solidarity inspiring, and its lighting design, costumes, and choreography as eye-poppingly fun as anything at a girl-group pop concert.” He also commended the musical for “never pretending to be a dramatically engaging piece of theatre.”
This 2024, the touring production is set to circle the U.S. and Canada, including a coveted stop in Cincinnati, Ohio, to present this fantastic epic to music and theater lovers. The stellar cast features the amazing talents of Haila Wilcoxon as Catherine of Aragon, Storm Lever as Anne Boleyn, Jasmine Forsberg as Jane Seymour, Olivia Donalson as Anna of Cleves, Didi Romero as Katherine Howard, and Gabriela Carrilo as Catherine Parr.
