Occurring mainly throughout the time span preceding and during the Rebellion of 1832 in Paris, the musical is the life story of Jean Valjean, a citizen of France who was pronounced guilty for 19 years due to stealing a loaf of bread for his nephew. After his time on the chain gang, he runs away and seeks a new life free from the law; he then takes on a different identity as Monsieur Madeleine, while still hiding from the law and Javert, an officer loyal to the letter of the law and determined to catch and bring Valjean back to prison.
Transpiring over a span of almost 20 years consisting of the musical's 2-hour and 50-minute run, Jean Valjean becomes intertwined through fated encounters with a few main figures throughout the show – Fantine is one of Jean Valjean's factory laborers who mothers an illegitimate child; Cosette is the foster baby of Monsieur Madeleine, who by no surprise Fantine’s daughter; Marius, a young local part of the rebellion and the true love of Cosette. Side roles featured in the play include the Thénardiers, immoral innkeepers who think only of themselves and are consumed with making profit by all means; Eponine, their child, who harbors a secret love for for Marius; and supporters of the government opposition including Gavroche, a small but cunning child, and the rebellion’s charismatic leader, Enjolras.
This diverse group of characters who meet by fate and their personal tales are presented beautifully on live stage, not just with the musical's 1800s French-inspired outfit and stage creations, but distinctly with Les Misérables being sung-through fully from start to finish.
