In the middle of social and political discontent in the 1800s in Paris, a sentenced thief going by the name of Jean Valjean breaks his parole after nineteen years on the chain gang. Because of quick thinking and a bit of luck, he is free to start his life anew and creates a new identity as Monsieur Madeleine, ultimately attaining the positions of a factory owner and a mayor. Though previously lucky in building his new life, hidden from his rival Javert, Jean Valjean is unfortunately pulled in the uprising of the commoners of Paris, wherein Jean Valjean is forced to make choices that would possibly put him and his daughter, Cosette, in danger.
This story from Victor Hugo's novel, one of love and loss, has been running for approximately four decades in several theaters all over the world.
