Prior to any Broadway performances began, a Canadian lawyer and theater producer named Micheal Rubinoff discovered the events that occurred in Gander, Newfoundland, following the attacks of 9/11. He ultimately choose the dynamic lyricists and composers Irene Sankoff and David Hein to conceive Come From Away’s story. This talented twosome gained a cult following from their edgy musical of My Mother's Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding, making them a perfect match for this endeavor.

Synopsis

Come From Away begins with an ordinary day in Gander, Newfoundland. Like the rest of the world, the quiet town could not predict that their lives and the globe at large would diverge from normalcy. However, the deadly results of September 11th begin unfolding, forcing nearby American pilots to make emergency landings in Gander.

The planes carried a total of 7,000 passengers of varying backgrounds and nearly 20 animals. Deception and foggy transmissions make matters more unpredictable for everyone. How will the Gander townsfolk accommodate their shocked and weary guests? Will the tension bring the passengers and locals closer or instigate friction?

The passengers and their pets eventually leave the white-knuckled environment of their aircrafts. Cultures clash between the Gander citizens and their unanticipated visitors, and fear takes root as the crowd gradually realizes what happened. The fantastic locals ease these growing tensions by awarding honorary citizenship to the confused and traumatized Americans.
