Moving away from the previous known story of Romeo & Juliet which debuted on stage around four centuries ago, viewers have distinguished the stark changes that had been applied to ‘& Juliet’, a significantly more recent show based on the same female lead. Shakespeare’s original plot revolves around the tragedy that comes about because of rash decision-making and the unbridled passion of two lovers, which results in the deaths of both Romeo and Juliet. On the other hand, ‘& Juliet’ looks beyond the said tragic ending and instead embraces a more positive outlook by concentrating on the infinite possibilities of life, even after such tragic experiences.

This messaging is evident in the new showl’s cast of characters, Juliet, and her gang of friends, who make a trip to Paris to discover their identities not just as individuals, but as remarkable women. ‘& Juliet’ is a good feminist perspective through the eyes of Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway, who takes control of her husband’s narrative and changes the ending of his popular classic. She gives both old characters from the original story a second opportunity to shine, while bringing in new and equally powerful women to the stage. Going off-script from Romeo & Juliet, the show is able to incorporate pop culture, specifically songs from recent decades, that depict the growing awareness and self-discovery of each of the women throughout the musical. Even the fashion worn by the musical’s leading ladies give a nod to Romeo & Juliet, while showing the contrast between the new show and the previous classic by contrasting Elizabethan dresses and iconography with today’s clothing styles. Each aspect of the production was carefully thought-out to emphasize empowerment and "being able to write your own story".
